What is self-raising flour?

Self raising flour is plain flour added with leavening agent. The leavening agent in the flour will produce carbon dioxide during cooking and the mixture expands with holes inside. Because the raising agents are mixed with the flour during manufacture, self raising flour is considered as more convenient to use than plain flour with separate raising agents. You use self raising flour for biscuits, tart crusts, pancakes or muffins.
